Is Puron R410a Being Phased Out?

Your AC equipment uses a chemical refrigerant to shift humidity within your home outside. This makes your home chilly and refreshing. The model of refrigerant used in your the U.S. house’s air conditioner has changed several times over the years, keeping up with technology advancements and environmental considerations.

All modern home AC equipment in targetlocation run on R410a, also referred to as Puron. But this refrigerant will eventually no longer be made. This is due to a sustained focus on restricting substances known to negatively affect the environment.

To understand the “why” behind air conditioning restrictions, it’s useful to put it into perspective. Two-thirds of the 128.5 million residences in the United States have air conditioners, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

But it’s not so much the air conditioning system itself, or even its cooling performance.

The issue in question is the refrigerant this equipment has to create the refreshing air we enjoy.

Installed after 2010

If your equipment was installed after January 1, 2010, it in all likelihood has R410a. And there’s lots of time for you to get ready for the phaseout. So, it’s not an issue you should be worried about right away.

Recommendations and timetables have been set for commercial cooling equipment. But the start of the phaseout for residential cooling systems hasn’t yet been scheduled. However, the phaseout could commence around 2024 and take 10 years to end.

By then, you might need to buy a new your system regardless, because the average life expectancy for an air conditioning system is usually 15 years.

Installed Before 2010

This chemical isn’t being created right now, but there are still many targetlocation residential cooling systems that have R22. If you have to get work, it can be very expensive because only recovered and recycled refrigerant is available.

A lot of the time, we recommend getting a new your equipment due to the rising costs of sustaining an AC with R22. Plus, you’ll be gaining a better energy-efficient system.

How Do I Find Out What Type Refrigerant My AC Uses?

If you’re unsure what form of refrigerant your air conditioner uses, you can find its nameplate. This piece is usually found on the outdoor condenser. Or you can look in your owner’s manual.

If you’re unable to come across it, targetlocation residents should contact us at phone and our pros can help.

Why are Refrigerants Detrimental to the Environment?

Older kinds of refrigerants can damage the environment and cause climate change. Here’s a brief look at the history of residential air conditioner refrigerants:

  • Residential air conditioners have used R22, or Freon, for a long time. Scientists determined it was detrimental to the planet and ozone, so manufacturing permanently stopped on January 1, 2020.
  • R410a is the substitute for R22. It’s what you’ll see in all new cooling units now.

What Should I Do in the Meantime?

If your air conditioner is approaching (or older than) 15 years, now’s a good time to get started prepping for replacement.
