Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is a great organization that provides financial support to men and women in the construction field who have life-altering injuries. Each year the Foundation honors numerous recipients with a grant and earlier in the year the Joseph Groh Foundation was delighted to present Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, born in Pakistan, received his MBA from the University of Chicago and afterwards acquired ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and received his HVAC and general contracting license. Ten years later, Adil experienced a massive stroke at the young age of 48. He lost the use of his left arm and the stroke left his left leg greatly impaired, leaving Adil with foot drop. Because he could only walk while using a heavy brace, his muscles began to degenerate and his doctors worried that he would eventually be confined to a wheelchair.

Unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their single source of income, putting financial tension on the couple with four children, three of which were in college. Their spirits were lifted when Adil was introduced to the WalkAid System, a piece of equipment that incorporates functional electrical stimulation to help people with foot drop walk again. Unfortunately, Adil and Laila could not afford the WalkAid System in addition to the intensive rehab that would be required so he could figure out how to use it.

Thankfully, an employee at WalkAid referred Adil and Laila to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, because of the generous grant, Adil was able to get the WalkAid System and has seen great success. His muscle is no longer indicating atrophy and is actually starting to regenerate, bringing optimism back to Adil and Laila.
